Objective To explore the characteristics of the body component and bone mineral density and their variability with age in middle-aged and elder Zhuang people in Baise, in order to provide scientific evidence for improving health status in minority region. Methods Six hundred and twenty (248 males and 372 females) healthy middle-aged and elder Zhuang people were selected randomly. Bone mineral density (BMD) of the right calcaneus and height, body weight, body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), lean body weight, muscle mass, fat mass, and body fat percentage (BFP) were detected. Software SPSS 17.0 was employed for statistical analysis. Results The height, weight, WHR, lean body weight, muscle mass, and BMD decreased with aging, but the fat mass and BFP had no significant difference among all age groups. BMD, height, weight, lean body weight, and muscle mass were higher in males than those in females in the same age group, but the fat mass and BFP were higher in females than those in males. Conclusion The age is negatively correlated with BMD. The height, weight, fat mass, BFP, lean body weight, and muscle mass are positively correlated with BMD in middle-aged and elder Zhuang people in Baise. |
