External and internal therapies with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for primary osteoporotic pain (POPP) are searched from CNKI, VIP database, Wanfang data, and PubMed database from 2013 to 2018. We summarize ten mainstream TCM therapies for POPP, including oral Chinese medication, acupuncture and moxibustion, tuina, external application, fuming and steaming, iontophoresis, needle-knife, acupoint injection, manipulation, and Qigong. It shows a significant improvement in TCM research on POPP. The trend of Chinese medicine and Western medicine to gain more connection with and benefit from each other is more obvious. Some weakness exists in the related research, mainly at the selection of study subjects, grouping methods, interventions, and endpoints. Therefore, a standardized POPP research guidance strategy is proposed in the future, in order to provide more favorable evidence for medical practice and to better guide the research and clinical work. |
