Objective To investigate the vitamin D status of Guangzhou residents aged 40 years old or more in summer. Methods In the present study, 590 subjects aged 40 years old or more were selected from May to October. Fast venous blood was extracted. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and calcium were examined using the Cobase 6000 (Rocher). Results Among 590 cases, the average level of 25(OH)D was 57.09±24.06 nmol/L in 238 males, and was 53.71±22.63 nmol/L in 352 females. Among our subjects, the normal vitamin D status accounted for 24.79%, vitamin D deficiency 33.19%, insufficiency 34.45%, and serious vitamin D deficiency 7.56%, respectively, in males. The normal vitamin D status accounted for 15.63%, vitamin D deficiency 40.63%, insufficiency 37.22%, serious and vitamin D deficiency 6.53%, respectively, in females. Vitamin D inadequacy existed generally in subjects aged 40 years or more in Guangzhou in summer. There was statistic difference between male and female subjects aged over 80 years old (P=0.026, P=0.043). Conclusion Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency are very common in subjects aged ≥ 40 years old living in Guangzhou in summer. In subjects aged ≥ 80 years old, vitamin D level is significantly lower in females than in males. Vitamin D intakes should be taken into account. |
