Objective Nutrition plays an important role in the prevention and management of osteoporotic vertebral fracture (OVF). Prealbumin is a commonly used clinical parameter in the evaluation of nutritional status. The aim of current study is to investigate the association between prealbumin level and OVF in postmenopausal women. Methods In this hospital ̄based cross ̄ sectional study? 1103 postmenopausal women (mean age? 67?? 92 ± 8?? 81 years) were enrolled. Clinical factors were assessed. The prealbumin level and bone mineral density (BMD) were measured. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the correlation between prealbumin and OVF. Results Compared with patients without OVF (n =481)? patients with OVF (n =622) exhibited lower prealbumin (192?? 73 ± 49?? 21 vs 216?? 71 ± 44?? 57 mg / L) level. After adjustment for traditional risk factors of osteoporosis? patients in the highest quartile of prealbumin level had a 0?? 369-fold likelihood of developing OVF compared with those in the lowest quartile of prealbumin level (P<0?? 001). The prevalence of OVF showed a significantly decreasing trend across the four quartile based on prealbumin. Meanwhile? low prealbumin level was significantly correlated with BMD (P < 0?? 001). Conclusion Low prealbumin level is a potential independent risk factor for OVF in Chinese postmenopausal women. The positive correlation between prealbumin and BMD hints intrinsic communication between nutrition and bone health.
