| With aging of the society, the incidence of postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) has become a common clinical disease in postmenopausal women. Its pathogenesis is complex and has not yet been fully elucidated. A large body of study has shown that the gut microbiota (GM) is closely related to PMOP, which provides a new perspective to explore the reconstruction of bone homeostasis. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has great potential to prevent and treat PMOP through GM, which is a new effective treatment approach. Therefore, the review aims to summarize studies from domestic and abroad to further illustrate the theoretical research, clinical research, and mechanism research of GM on regulating PMOP. Additionally, we also summarize studies that explore the effect of herbal compounds, related herbs (single components), Chinese patent medicines, and other TCM treatments on improving bone health through GM. In conclusion, regulating GM may broaden perspective of PMOP research, which is significant for clinical prevention and treatment. |
