Osteoporosis, a chronic metabolic bone disease, occurs when the balance between bone formation and bone absorption is lost in the bone cells of the body. The mitochondrion is a key organelle in the body which provides energy for cellular activities and is capable of adapting and influencing numerous stresses and metabolic needs within the cell, resulting in the process of cell differentiation and cell death in the body. Mitochondrial dynamics encompasses the changes in mitochondrial fusion, differentiation and fission, autophagy, and transport, which plays a key role in the occurrence of OP. Current scientific research indicates that under normal physiological conditions, mitochondrial dynamics actively controls the balance between bone formation and bone absorption, which plays an important role in the stabilization of bone status. Conversely, in the pathological case, the obstacle of mitochondrial dynamics may break the equilibrium relationship between bone formation and bone absorption, which determines the occurrence of OP to a considerable extent. Therefore, in this context, mitochondrial dynamics has increasingly become a research hot spot in targeted therapy for OP. After reviewing the relevant literature at home and abroad, this article provides a review on the correlation between mitochondrial dynamics and OP and the targeted therapy with traditional Chinese medicine, with a view to provide references and strategies for further prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. |
