The gut-bone axis theory reveals the complex interplay between the gut microbiota and bone health. This review focuses on the role of exosomes from intestinal epithelial cells in regulating the ferroptosis of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), and discusses their potential regulatory function in the gut-bone axis. Ferroptosis is a form of cell death associated with iron dependence and lipid peroxidation, which is crucial for the osteogenic differentiation and bone metabolic processes of BMSCs. Intestinal epithelial cell exosomes affect the ferroptosis process of BMSCs by carrying bioactive substances and RNA molecules, thereby participating in the remodeling and homeostasis maintenance of bone tissue. In addition, intestinal epithelial cell exosomes may inhibit ferroptosis and regulate bone metabolism by activating specific signaling pathways, such as PI3K/AKT/Nrf2 and NF-κB. This review emphasizes the importance of maintaining intestinal health in the prevention and treatment of bone diseases, and provides new perspectives and potential targets for future research and treatment. |
