| Short-chain fatty acids, as important metabolites of human intestinal flora, influence the development of several types of diseases while maintaining intestinal homeostasis. With the in-depth study of the intestinal flora, it is found that short-chain fatty acids intervene sarcopenia by regulating skeletal muscle metabolism while affecting bone homeostasis. In view of this, this paper reviews the positive regulation of skeletal muscle metabolism by short-chain fatty acids through the enhancement of neuromuscular junction function, improvement of insulin sensitivity in the skeletal muscle system, inhibition of intestinal inflammation, and modulation of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase/milk mitogen-activated protein kinase (ERK/MAPK), phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B/mammalian target of rapamycin (PI3K/Akt/mTOR) signaling pathways, with the aim of improving bone homeostasis. Skeletal muscle metabolism is reviewed with the aim of providing a theoretical basis for the treatment of sarcopenia via gut flora. |
